Full Review

After 45 days of daily use across video calls, coffee shop sessions, and two cross-country flights, the Sony WH-1000XM5 earned its place as our top audio pick.

The noise cancellation is genuinely class-leading. In a busy café averaging 70 dB ambient noise, the XM5 reduced perceived volume to a comfortable background hum. Airplane engine drone — historically the hardest scenario for ANC — was reduced to a faint whisper.

Call quality saw meaningful improvement from the XM4. The four-beamforming-microphone array isolated voice clearly while filtering keyboard clicks and background conversations. Meeting participants consistently rated call clarity as "excellent" in our blind tests.

Battery life matched Sony's 30-hour claim with ANC enabled. Quick charge (3 minutes for 3 hours) saved us during a forgotten-charge morning more than once.

The non-foldable redesign is the main trade-off. The slimmer case is nice, but the headphones take more backpack space than foldable competitors like the Bose QC Ultra.
